European Nitro Funny Car Series qualifying session 2 (left lane first)

Gordon Smith 4.7960/211.10 bye; Kevin Kent shut off, Jason Phelps 5.0106/189.01 bye

Nice run for Gordon. 0.9389 to sixty, looked to get off it just before the eighth 3.7437/209.94. Clean run under power but a puff of smoke from the motor as the car passed under the top end gantry. Track checked and found to be OK. Kevein Kent's motor started then shut off. After a brief hold Jason's crew were given the order to fire up, Kevin was towed back to the pits. 1.0242 to sixty for Jason, nice high header flames, off the gas before the eighth 3.8588/208.07. Word came back from the top end "This Funny Car is covered in oil".

Qualifying after this session:

  1. Gordon Smith 4.7960/211.10
  2. Jason Phelps 4.8035/239.06

A big Thumbs Up to the race officials, track and safety crews, and of course to the racers for getting through so much today. None of us can remember the last time there were three Pro sessions in one day and we managed first rounds of the larger Sportsman classes as well. Great job all.

Fantastic run for Marc to take #1 spot! 1.0260 to sixty, some shake but nothing he couldn't handle, storming eighth 3.9418/190.95. 1.0142 to sixty for Norbert but the car seemed to be ailing towards 330 feet, a bit like a clockwork toy winding down. Looked like problems for Eurodragster.com sponsor Andy R both getting the tyres to light and then selecting reverse after the burnout but got there. 0.9648 to sixty for Andy R, driving through what looked like bad shake, the Camaro weaving left and right but he wasn't getting off it. 4.1411/173.45 at the eighth and on it all the way. 1.2151 with shake for Andy, 4.8625/158.48 to the eighth. 1.0147 to sixty for tero, 1.0173 for David. Very gutsy drive by Bruno. 0.9906 to sixty and then hit shake which he drove through even though the Vette came within a gnat's of the centre line at 330 feet. 3.9701/183.22 at the eighth and into #3 spot. Great run! 0.8490 to sixty, 2.2119 to 330 feet, smoke from the motor towards the eighth 3.2151/246.87 and then a huge ball of flame and the car made a step to the right. Duncan had a hold of it and he is safely in the ladder now. Micke and Jari next, potential here for one to put the other in the trailer for the rest of the event, or of course for both to pull out the big one and can Noah Stutz who is not running this session. 0.8847 to sixty for Micke to Jari's 0.8729, Jari drove through shake and then his tyres started to haze then blaze about 200 feet out, Jari stayed with it and the dragster made a hard right turn, off the gas at about 400 feet and not racing tomorrow. Micke's motor in distress by the eighth, smoking at 3.4183/199.63, and a huge ball of flame right in the eighth mile speed trap. Kevin Kent 4.8282/239.05, Gordon Smith 4.8472/251.89 DQ; Jason Phelps 4.8035/239.06 bye

Some consternation as Gordon appeared to have trouble getting reverse but found it just as everyone started to sprint to his aid. Gordon just away first 0.2280 to Kevin's 0.2461. Kevin left with a cylinder out, 1.0155 to sixty to Gordon's quicker 0.9444. Both Kevin and Gordon blackstriped their lanes all the way, Gordon's car making moves left and right. 4.70 or quicker gets Tethys his licence. Storming run, licence acquired! 0.8760 to sixty feet, tyres blackstriping past sixty, the car was fishtailing a little towards the eighth 3.2756/249.52 then started to make bigger moves and got close to the guardrail. Tethys stayed with it as long as he dared but shut it off just before the stripe, had his hands full for a moment there by the look of things. Great driving job. Jari deputising for the injured Chris Andrews, his first run in this particular car. A long time working on the wheelie bar before Jari was called forward to stage. Familiarisation pass I think. 0.8916 to sixty, looked smooth with not much in the way of shake, off the gas just past 330 feet 2.3217, a slowing 3.4837/185.72 at the eighth. Great burnout by Noah, huge amount of smoke and off it precisely on sixty feet. 0.089 RT but a cylinder out at the it, 0.9302 to sixty, cylinder stayed out all the way. 2.4168 to 330 feet then smoke from the motor, a ball of orange and green flame and a bang as the blower relief panel burst and the chutes deployed. Slowing 3.5290/206.88 at the eighth. Safety crews chased Noah down as a precautionary after the fire. Storming 0.8330 to sixty for Duncan, that is one of the quickest sixties I have ever seen. 0.8770 for Eurodragster.com sponsor Urs. Duncan to 330 feet in 2.2678 to Urs' 2.2748 but then Duncan's tyres went up in smoke and his blower belt broke. Urs to the eighth in 3.2768/250.06 with bright orange flame from the left bank. Urs into #1 spot but maybe at a cost. New cars for Micke and Stig so I would not be surprised to see short passes. John Smith as ever supervising Stig's car. Weirdness as Stig blipped the throttle before the lights ran, the car moved out of stage pointing at the centre line and promptly stopped and staged on the rear wheel, the lights ran, Micke left and Stig got back on the throttle briefly. 0.8631 to sixty for Micke and off the gas before 330 feet in 2.2353. New cars also for Anita and Thomas. Storming 0.8534 to sixty for Thomas, Anita's 0.8863 was no slouch either. Thomas to 330 feet in 2.1875 then a flash and a bang and a puff of smoke and Thomas' chutes deployed just before the eighth 3.2085/219.72. 2.2781 to 330 feet for Anita driving through shake and off the gas before the eighth 3.3959/194.56.

1.0014 to sixty for Jan, not much shake, 4.3997/157.36 at the eighth. Got a bounce on in the second half and you could hear the engine note matching the bounce, Jan shut it off and put the chutes out before the stripe. 0.9946 to sixty for Magnus and 1.0018 for Michael, synchronised shake and both cars went towards their respective guardrails, both off the gas before 330 feet. Thomas away first 0.1247 to 0.1942, Jimmy had the better sixty 0.9845 to Thomas' 1.0173. Both drove through a little shake, both moved for the centre line but stayed with it. Thomas to the eighth in 4.3365/164.73 to Jimmy's 4.2532/165.22.

FIA Pro Modified qualifying session 1 (left lane first)

Chris Isaacs 7.8031/193.88 bye; Roger Moore 11.8846/69.17, Andy Robinson 6.6640/231.89; Tero Laukkanen 7.9013/121.11, Rick Garrett 6.7931/194.62; Andy Wright 7.4553/215.13, Jean Dulamon 6.8761/202.35;

Roger Johansson 6.7170/173.04 bye; Bruno Bader no time DQ (bye); Norbert Kuno 6.2010/231.55, David Vegter 6.6449/222.31;

Robert Joosten no time, Marc Meihuizen 6.9630/233.80; Mattias Wulcan 7.8394/124.11, Micke Gullqvist 7.3669/149.11

1.1705 to sixty for Eurodragster.com sponsor Chris, driving through shake and then pedalling as the Duster made a move. 5.2040/145.24 at the eighth. Not yet licenced as 7.4 needed so not in the qualifying list. Roger to sixty in 1.0301 and then hit shake and shut it off. 1.0331 to sixty for Eurodragster.com sponsor Andy, carbon copy of yesterday's annulled run hitting shake and pedalling, hitting more shake and pedalling, the car picked up some towards the eighth 4.4806/172.93 and Andy stayed on it all the way from there. Tero to sixty in 1.0397 to Rick's very rapid 0.8811, Tero was on one until there was a puff of smoke from the right side and then the left tyre blackstriped and the car turned right, Tero off the gas about 500 feet out and 4.4384/138.92 at the eighth. 4.2783/157.44 at the eighth for Rick and looked to be off it a touch before the stripe. Andy to sixty in 1.0778 with tyres shaking, a couple of pedals and then back on it, pulling the Coupe away from the centre line. 1.1086 to sixty for Jean, driving through very evident shake but on his best run in a while. Jean to the eighth in 4.5021/164.28 and Andy there in 5.0733/157.38. Some clean-up in both lanes after this pair.

Roger took the bye on the re-start,scheduled to run against Mats Wicktor but no sign of Mats after yesterday's rough-sounding run. Move to the right at the hit but Roger stayed with it, 0.9632 to sixty but something didn't sound right with the gear shifts, actually sounded like a clutch-and-stick manual shift. 4.1653/162.51 to the eighth and shut off not long past. Bruno left before the lights ran so no time. 0.0917 RT for David to Kuno's 0.7490, Norbert had the better sixty 1.0272 to David's 1.0833, David hit shake past the Tree and sounded like one pedal and back on it. Norbert to the eighth in 4.0551/181.40 to David's 4.3718/163.43 but all eyes on David in the shutdown area as his chutes didn't deploy and the car did a flat spin at the end of the track in a huge cloud of dust. Word is that David is quite OK, although from here it didn't appear that the car hit anything we were later told that a rear quarter hit the guardrail. Thanks to MSA Championship PR Robin Jackson for letting us know that Norbert's ET is a new Personal Best, well done Norbert! Robert to sixty in 1.1770 and Marc 1.3422, both bit bad shake which made their motors scream, Robert got off the gas and stayed off it whilst Marc pedalled and gave it another go. Marc to the eighth in 4.8252/177.66, Robert's time came up as 6.593 but he was nowhere near the stripe at the time, something in the top end lights I guess. 0.9935 to sixty for Mattias and 0.9877 for Micke then both hit shake. Both off the pedal and on it again at the same time, 4.4024/138.44 eighth for Mattias and 4.5571/157.41 for Micke. Mattias off the gas past the eighth and Micke not long after.

Qualifying after this session:

  1. Norbert Kuno 6.2010/231.55
  2. David Vegter 6.6449/222.31
  3. Andy Robinson 6.6640/231.89

FIA Top Methanol Funny Car qualifying session 2 (left lane first)

Gareth Ellis 6.0494/240.16 bye; Jurgen Nagel 5.8400/245.51, Steph Milam 5.9893/235.04; Johan Lindberg 5.7535/231.66, Danny Bellio no time

0.9447 to sixty for Gareth, front end up and heading for the centre line. Had to pedal it to get it away from the line, 4.0210/186.60 at the eighth. Jurgen into #1 and in the other lane a new PB for Steph, her first five, well done Steph! Steph got a visible jump on Jurgen 0.3674 to 0.6252 and the better sixty 1.0008 to 1.0039. Jurgen to the eighth in 3.8415/195.41 to Steph's 3.9266/190.15. I think a new PB for Jurgen also or close to it, well done Jurgen! Looked like a Guard Beam violation for Danny, -0.2382 red and ridiculous 0.6186 sixty foot. 0.9486 to sixty for Johan, getting a serious bounce on at the eighth 3.7509/198.94, all four wheels off by the look of it. Johnny shut it off and had the chutes out at about 1100 feet but still took #1 spot. 5.3813/246.40 came up as Danny's ET and speed, the speed was good but the ET not.

Qualifying after this session:

  1. Johan Lindberg 5.7535/231.66
  2. Jurgen Nagel 5.8400/245.51
  3. Steph Milam 5.9893/235.04
  4. Gareth Ellis 5.9925/243.87
  5. Danny Bellio 6.3864/185.88

FIA Top Methanol Dragster qualifying session 2 (left lane first)

Dave Wilson 5.6882/246.86, Chris Polidano 5.5506/262.02; Manty Bugeja 5.5799/262.52, Johnny Lagg 6.3215/154.20; Dennis Habermann 5.3186/267.33, Timo Habermann 5.2425/269.83

Chris' tyres didn't light on the burnout. Didn't harm the run though, 0.9272 to sixty after a 4.2186 RT. 0.9991 to sixty for Grumpy, straight run and looked like all cylinders lit. Grumpy to the eighth in 3.7589/206.98, Chris pedalled just before the eighth 3.6815/204.21 and then back on it all the way. Chris in at #3, improvement for Grumpy but stayed in place. Manty deep-staged which will have robbed him of some ET. 1.0014 to sixty to Johnny's 0.9492, Jonny with the better 330 foot time 2.4852 to 2.5190, then Johnny's motor started to smoke. Meanwhile Manty was going great guns at the eighth 3.7074/208.98 to Johnny's engine-smoking 3.7080/194.26, Johnny getting off the gas at that point I think. Improvement for Manty but stayed in place. Storming match-up between Timo and Dennis. Timo away first 0.0580 to 0.960 and the quicker sixty 0.8676 to Dennis' 0.8964 with shake, 3.4304/217.59 to the eighth for Timo, the dragster making moves left and right, Dennis to the eighth in 3.4996/214.94. Timo's run the quickest ever in European Top Methanol Dragster but too quick to be backed up by yesterday's best. Plenty of time to back it up for a record though.

Simon has done some rapid research and Jim Whiteley has run the world's quickest blown-alcohol TAD pass at 5.178/277.43; Shaun Cowie was previously the second-quickest at 5.243, so Timo's run is the second quickest-ever blown-alcohol TMD pass on the planet. Well done Timo!

Qualifying after this session:

  1. Timo Habermann 5.2425/269.83
  2. Dennis Habermann 5.3186/267.33
  3. Chris Polidano 5.5506/262.02
  4. Manty Bugeja 5.5799/262.52
  5. Dave Wilson 5.6882/246.86
  6. Johnny Lagg 5.8748/212.78

Comp Eliminator qualifying session 3

A big Hello to our good buddy Thorsten Appel who is tuned in from Germany, hope you are enjoying the coverage Skorpion. 300-foot burnout by Robin Orthodoxou before his match-up with Neil Hunter. Robin into #1 spot at that point going under the 7.72 index. Next pair and a great driving job by Stefan Winter as the Gullwing Merc got a wiggle on and then into a serious pendulum effect making particularly hard turns about 500 feet out, Stefan got off the gas and held onto it. Per Simon's pit note Eurodragster.com Blogger Andy Frost now running in Comp Eliminator as it does not have the Electrimotion shut-off device. Blasted into #1 with a 6.786 on a 7.03 index. Nice-looking half pass for Kev Perkins in the Olds.

That's Sportsman Q3 done, we are now going into the first of today's three planned Pro qualifying sessions.

Lucas Oil Junior Dragster qualifying session 3

Big move for Shannon Kiddell first pair, up from #24 to #5. Saskia Fensome Jell into ninth next pair. Harley Coulsell into top spot from #17, in testing last week Harley's every RT was a 0.0 and two of them were 0.00s, let's not forget that his is a Junior Stock Dragster and they don't react so quickly. Looks like we have a natural there. Ruaridh Hart now in what was Shannon Kiddell's dragster, the car still pink so dad Ian wearing a pink shirt in solidarity. Belle Wheeler next to make a move, #15 to #10. Annie Wallace up from #9 to #6 next pair. Katie Ellis up from #23 to #16 last pair. That's Junior Dragster qualifying done, eliminations next time round.

Topspeed Automotive Street Eliminator qualifying session 3

A big Thank You to Vinnie and the guys at Eurodragster.com Topspeed Automotive for the team T-Shirt. Huge, more than 45-degree wheelie for Eurodragster.com sponsor Jon Webster, front end didn't come down until about 200 feet. Jon pulled across to the side of the track but then drove the Comet back to the pits so hopefully that means no damage to the front end, that the clean-up was almost non-existent hopefully confirms it. Matthew Smith now racing the very pretty Mustang formerly owned by Phil Peck. Great to see Steve Pateman back on track, tiny wheelie from the Calibra and then a wicked left turn as the power kicked in. Fantastic PB for Alex McIntosh on his return, his first seven to boot at 7.943, well done Alex! Big sidestep by Steve Neimantas' Bentley as he passed the Tree, back on the gas and 179.96 at the stripe. Stu Williams took #1 spot back with the last run of the session.

Super Comp qualifying session 3

In the first pair a huge wheelie by Jon Giles, even by his own fine standards. Photographer Julian stood right there so a spectacular picture or two to come I'd imagine. Stuart Doignie up from #14 to #4 in the second pair. Jeremy Prince backed up way off his (spectacular) burnout tracks, Chief Starter Ian Marshall stepped in and directed him a bit closer to centre. 8.5161 breakout by Richie Webb in his Beetle weaving left and right all the way down the track, that ET without his usual spectacular sixty foot, calmed the launch down some. Next pair and Dave Day moved up from #16 to #2. Nicky Frost also moved up from #16 next pair, up to #8.

Today's provisional running order is now available and can be viewed via the Event Index. Please note that the running order is provisional and subject to change due to weather or track conditions or for any other reason deemed necessary by race officials.

07:20

Good morning and welcome to our coverage of FIA / FIM European Championships Round 1 brought to you in association with Alamo Rent-A-Car.

We have a fair bit of sun here at Santa Pod this morning. It did rain overnight but now there is a lot more sun than there is cloud, the track is already visibly drying and the track crew are already working on helping it along.

This weekend's webcast is provided by Santa Pod Raceway, and continues to be free. There is a link on the Event Index page or go to www.santapod.co.uk/webtv.php. A large number of people seem to have had problems with the following simple clause in the last couple of days but if we bang on about it enough then maybe it will go in: if you should have any queries or comments including praise regarding the webcam at this event then please address them to Santa Pod Raceway. Hopefully that's clear, these computers don't allow for Braille.

We will have today's provisional running order shortly but, roughly, the plan is as follows. We will not be picking up where we left off yesterday, as yesterday's partially-completed Pro Modified qualifiying session has been annulled. We will be starting with the remainder of Sportsman Q3, and then the first of today's three planned Pro qualifying sessions. Super Pro ET and Pro ET will commence their eliminations in between today's first and second Pro sessions. Should we have a third Pro qualifying session today then Top Methanol Dragster and Top Methanol FC will not participate because they both completed their Q1 yesterday.

A big Good Morning to Andy and Jennifer Bissett who are tuned in from Fiji which as Andy says must qualify for some kind of distance award. Great to hear from you Andy and hope that you are enjoying the coverage.

We are due to start at 9:30 and it could be one busy day. Stay tuned and as soon as the first pair fire up we'll start to bring you the news.
