Sverre's tyre went up in smoke at the hit. Another good start for Jan Sturla, 1.0966 to sixty and 4.2339/279.07 at the eighth but again had to back off as the bike neared the guardrail. Duncan away first 0.1058 to 0.1825 and the better sixty 0.8775 to Antti's 0.8894, Antti was beginning to claw it back by 330 feet 2.2780/288.15 to Duncan's 2.3165/281.10 but then Duncan got off the throttle before the eighth. Antti looked to have cylinders out briefly on the right bank but was at the eighth in 3.2898/405.41 and went into #2 spot off the trailer. Due to run next, Chris Andrews was pushed away without starting. A flash of orange flame from the right side of Jari's motor as it started, I am guessing something in one of the headers. Micke's tyres up in smoke at the hit and he played no further part. 0.8733 to sixty for Jari, looked to have cylinders out briefly on the left side. 2.2893/281.84 to 330 feet and 3.3176/397.35 at the eighth, into #3. Great match-up between Anita and Thomas. Thomas awaty first 0.1304 to 0.2229 and the much better sixty 0.8711 to 0.9303. 2.2579/289.70 to 330 feet for Thomas to Anita's 2.3119/294.76 and the quicker eighth 3.2452/419.91 to Anita's 3.3031/413.16. Magnuis away first 0.2169 to 0.2275, to sixty in 1.0266 to Thomas' 0.9814, cars looked side by side at the eighth with Thomas there in 4.2805/263.54 and Magnus in 4.3466/263.23. Thomas shut it off after the eighth, nothing visibly amiss though. Jan lost drive at the hit and pulled over about 400 feet out. Meanwhile Michael blew his PB into next week, 1.0047 to sixty and 4.2896/266.40 at the eighth, well done Michael! #1 spot at that point put the icing on the cake. 0.9900 to sixty for Jimmy and 1.0216 for Micke, Micke hit shake and his car was moving left and right and he quit it past 300 feet. From where I was sat it didn't look like shake for Jimmy but it sounded as if he lost drive, motor was screaming. 1.0274 to sixty for Ulf and 1.0005 for Jan, Jan had the better sixty 4.3869/256.29 to Ulf's 4.3935/259.49 but then Jan shut it off before 1000 feet - nothing visibly wrong. 1.0115 ro sixty for Christian but then bad shake, the Escort turned left and Christian got off the gas. 1.0160 to sixty for Mats, 4.4160/257.63 at the eighth.

Instant shake for Stefan G, a long pedal then back on it and through the gears. A pop from Jöran's motor after the burnout but carried on to stage. On the green Jöran's car didn't move. 1.0349 to sixty for Håkan, 4.0869/294.28 with the car bouncing gently but stayed with it. Jöran went up on the revs but the motor died as the car moved out of stage. Pulled over then pushed back. Johan's Viper pretty much crept off the line and didn't seem to pick up at all. 1.0213 to sixty for Anders and then bad shake and the Cuda turned hard right, Anders pedalled and wrenched it straight, 4.8917/269.73 at the eighth and the car started to move around its lane in the second half. Off the gas and chutes out before the stripe. You don't often see Micke Gullqvist this early in a qualifying session. 0.9925 to sixty for Micke and then bad shake which he tried to drive through until the Camaro turned hard right and he had to pedal, 4.3452/245.23 at the eighth. 0.9894 to sixty for Norbert K, drove through a little shake, 4.2451/269.46 at the eighth and up the ladder. 1.0146 to sixty for Stefan H then shake and off the throttle. 1.0569 to sixty for Fredrik, 4.2017/280.81 at the eighth, straight clean run and into the ladder. 0.9936 to sixty for Benny, good-looking run from the start, 4.1869/275.51 at the eighth but go very close to the guardrail in the second half, pulled it away and shut it off early. 1.4251 to sixty for Paolo, troubled run, the pick-up never picked up. Robert away first 0.0912 to 0.1072, not much between the sixties 0.9860 for Urban and 0.9824 for Robert. Urban had the better eighth 3.9633/271.36 to Robert's 4.0544/290.17 but Urban's 'Vette ran out of puff towards the stripe, I thought I heard the dull thud of a blower panel so maybe that was Urban's motor although you should not hold me to that. 1.2639 to sixty for Norbert S and the Avenger never really got going. 1.1267 to sixty for Tero, 4.5237/290.68 at the eighth and visibly accelerating hard in the second half. 1.0846 to sixty for Mats, 4.5030/256.29 at the eighth and looked to shut off a touch early. 1.0399 to sixty for Terje then the car got very close indeed to the centre line, 4.0221/294.76 at the eighth right by the line and off the gas in the second half. 1.1986 to sixty for Peterm shake, off the gas. 1.0923 to sixty for Jan then hit bad shake and the Badillac turned right with its passenger side door flapping open, a pedal to pull it straight, more shake and the door flapped open again but Jan stayed with it. Micke's motor hesitated just before the burnout but all OK. 1.0726 to sixty for Micke to David's 1.0308, 4.3795/273.42 at the eighth to David's 4.0678/296.87, Micke's car just looked to run out of grunt in the second half. Straight clean run for David and up to fifth. Nice run for Stefan but no improvement, 1.0565 to sixty and 4.1450/296.87 at the eighth. 1.1809 to sixty for Johan, 4.3710/279.50 at the eighth, no improvement either. Great match between Marc and Freddy! 1.0035 to sixty for Marc and 1.0469 for Freddy, Marc then hit shake which he drove through but then either he pedalled or the shake stopped dead, either way the car stopped looking blurry. 4.0761/289.23 to the eighth for Marc, 4.0577/298.67 for Freddy. Some smoke from Marc's motor in the shutdown area. Mats and Patrik, that'll be two guys with bad headaches. 1/0234 to sixty for Mats and 1.0340 for Patrik and then both hit shake which we could feel in here in Race Control. Patrik's Camaro turned left and Mats' Crown Victoria left and right and both got off the throttle. Great match between Niclas and Tami. 0.0514 to 0.1157 holeshot for Tami, Niclas had the better sixty 0.9893 to 1.0200 and the better eighth 3.9507/299.50 to 3.9986/299.00, the cars looked side by side all the way and check out the identical terminal speeds. 1.0093 to sixty for Roger to Mattias' 0.9962, Roger hit shake and was off it around 300 feet out. Thanks to Spencer Tramm for getting in touch to let us know that Jonnie Lindberg's 432.69 kmh / 268.86 mph in Top Methanol Funny Car is actually faster than Frank Manzo's NHRA record of 268.06 mph or 431.40 kmh so we could be on a world best here.

FIA Top Fuel Dragster qualifying session 1 (left lane first)

Chris Andrews 9.4767/97.70 bye; Urs Erbacher 4.5850/344.61, Patrik Pers 5.4104/202.70; Jari Halinen 4.2103/426.88, Timo Lehtimäki shut off; Stig Neergaard 4.0658/387.65, Micke Kågered 9.2206/94.21; Anita Mäkelä 4.2032/457.24, Thomas Nataas 8.5614/108.00

0.9074 to sixty for Chris and then off the gas. Crew looked unconcerned so maybe that was just a planned launch. 0.8980 to sixty for Patrik, 2.3204/279.50 to 330 feet and then from here the back of the car looked to jump in the air, Patrik off the gas at that point, slowing 3.7073/243.46 at the eighth. 0.9380 to sixty for Eurodragster.com sponsor Urs, 2.4191/269.06 at 330 feet then sustained fire from the back of the motor but Urs was still on the throttle so maybe a gasket or a plug out. 3.5423/350.88 at the eighth and off the gas just after. Clean-up in Urs' lane but looks like bits rather than oil. Timo's Crew Chief signalled him to shut off before staging, his front man didn't see the sign and was motioning Timo forward as the motor was leaning out. Jari took the bye, 0.8770 to sixty then two cylinders out on the right side, 2.2971/280.52 to 330 feet and 3.3311/394.74 at the eighth. 0.9026 to sixty for Micke and off the gas, not obvious from here why. 0.8656 to sixty for Stig, 2.2030/303.71 at 330 feet and 3.1660/423.20 at the eighth, judging by Stig's terminal speed he was off the throttle just past the eighth so plenty more left in there. Anita with tuning input from the Lagana brothers who are here fresh from setting an IHRA Top Fuel speed record in the USA. 0.9223 to sixty for Anita to Thomas' 0.8919, Thomas off the gas before 300 feet. 2.3284/287.85 to 330 feet for Anita, 3.3480/400.00 at the eighth. Anita's run looked quicker than the ET which came up but a big speed.

FIA Pro Stock qualifying session 1 (left lane first)

Mats Jacobsson 7.1857/323.74, Christian Sagelv 6.7999/314.14; Jan Ericsson 17.7843/60.64, Ulf Wagnhester 6.8426/324.32; Jan Palmqvist 8.0225/179.28 bye, Magnus Pettersson shut off; Micke Callin 15.8467/83.67, Michael Malmgren 16.0793/74.59; Thomas Lindström no time DQ, Jimmy Ålund 14.8582/71.27;

6.7 off the trailer for Christian on the back of his excellent performance in Germany. 1.1032 to sixty for Mats with shake, 1.0114 for Christian. Mats looked to pedal briefly. Christian to the eighth in 4.3660/261.37 to Mats' 4.7159/253.40. Christian looked to shut it off a touch early so more to come there. 1.0551 to sixty for Jan E and then bad shake, the Grand Am went for the centre line and Jan got off the throttle. 1.0573 to sixty for Ulf, 4.4210/260.74 at the eighth. Magnus seemed to have problems before his burnout, Jan P almost back at the start line before Magnus pulled his burnout but he got back very quickly so as not to keep Jan waiting but then shut it off before staging and pushed back. Storming 0.9980 to sixty for Jan, 4.4622/222.96 at the eighth and shut off, I am guessing a planned half pass. 1.071 to sixty for Micke and 1.0276 for Michael, both had tyres shaking and motors zinging by then and both shut off by 100 feet. Thomas' car jumped out of stage going up on the revs. 0.9932 to sixty for Jimmy and then bad shake and he shut off.

FIA Pro Modified qualifying session 1 (left lane first)

Benny Strand 11.3846/133.96 bye; Paolo Andreini 8.9253/300.84, Peter Ritscher 7.5123/307.34; Patrik Wikström 6.2283/371.90; Stefan Holmberg 11.4137/140.41; Fredrik Lundh 10.2108/147.78 bye; Stefan Gustafsson no time, Micke Johansson 6.6792/330.28; Terje Håkonsen 6.5560/331.29, Johan Samuelsson 14.6995/67.38; Stefan Carlsson 6.3028/373.44 bye; Tero Laukkanen 6.8896/417.31 DQ, Johan Westberg 6.3971/359.28; Håkan Persson no time DQ, Norbert Schneider 8.3384/191.63; Jan Gunnarsson 6.5430/351.36, Mats Wicktor 7.5758/186.46 DQ; Tami Brander 6.1441/369.61, Jari Parén 7.6845/296.38; Anders Nilsson 13.6185/98.27, Roger Johansson 6.0279/376.31; Freddy Fagerström 6.2555/362.66, Niclas Andersson 6.0633/374.48; Norbert Kuno 11.0567/138.75, Urban Johansson 10.7191/120.91; Robert Joosten 8.0830/176.59, Mats Eriksson 6.3096/376.57; David Vegter 6.3047/372.41 , Marc Meihuizen 6.3232/344.39; Mattias Wulcan 5.9963/390.74, Micke Gullqvist 12.3181/166.82

A bit of confusion on the start line as Paolo Andreini came forward to run in the left lane alongside Benny and was told to wait. A brief lively discussion between crew and starter Nettan and the crew was left in no doubt that they were running next pair. Tyre spin and zinging motor for Benny a few feet out, 1.0460 to sixty, a pop and flame from his motor and shut off. Paolo looked to hit shake, 1.5693 to sixty and off the gas. 1.1284 to sixty for Peter but the car looked and sounded to be labouring, 4.8953/236.53 to the eighth. Great to see Patrik on the track where he belongs. 0.9988 to sixty for Patrik, 1.0325 for Stefan G and his car was heading straight for the centre line, do not pass Go, do not collect 200 SEK whether he liked it or not. Stefan shut it off about 200 feet out trying to wrench it straight. 4.1035/297.03 to the eighth for Patrik and on the gas all the way, nice run. 1.1700 to sixty for Fredrik with tyres chattering and motor starting to zing, tried to drive through it but then got off the pedal a couple of hundred feet out. Micke J's motor hesitated audibly at full chat during the burnout, I guess nothing wrong as Micke stayed with it. Instant red for Stefan, again I couldn't swear that I saw him move but I don't think it was an Autostart DQ. No dissent from his crew though. 1.0668 to sixty for Micke, 4.3125/271.63 at the eighth, straight clean run. 1.0601 to sixty for Terje, 4.2356/275.93 at the eighth, sounded from here as if Terje's motor was misfiring - something wasn't right. Johan sat in stage building up the revs and hit instant shake at the hit, shut it off immediately as the Viper moved left. Gutsy drive by Stefan C, 1.0218 to sixty driving through shake then the Camaro made a move to the right and he had to pedal, but straight back on it. 4.1688/291.73 at the eighth, obviously a lot more left in that car. Tero on the first half of a European speed record, well done Tero! Not such a good start though as Tero's tyres went up in smoke at the hit, 1.3494 to sixty, pedalled and got back on it. 1.0975 to sixty for Johan and the much quicker eighth 4.1907/287.75 to Tero's 4.8854/304.57 but that turbo really kicked in in the second half. We then heard that Tero failed a fuel check and had been DQ'd. Håkan bulbed by the Autostart, 1.1794 to sixty for Norbert S and a good-looking run to start with but then the Avenger started to move left and right, 4.9123/229.89 at the eighth and shut off by then. 1.1117 to sixty for Jan to Mats' quicker 1.0891, Jan looked to be driving through shake and then more than made up the deficit before the eighth 4.2878/280.23 to Mats' 4.5353/253.28 shut off as the 'Vette was moving left and right, chutes out past the eighth. Mats subsequently DQ'd for a Blue Line violation. Suerb run for Tami, 1.0103 to sixty to Jari's 1.0639, 4.0140/298.18 at the eighth by which time looked to be struggling 4.9101/225.66, Jari off the throttle at that point or soon after. Roger's car seemed to struggle to pull the burnout but sometimes nitrous cars sound hesitant when not under full load. Fantastic run for Roger! 0.9900 to sixty and a storming 3.9595/304.74 at the eighth and into #1 spot at that point, I am thinking a PB for Roger also, well done Roger! 1.1447 to sixty for for Anders with bad shake and he shut it off very quickly. 300-foot burnout by Freddy. Niclas left Freddy for dead off the line 0.2065 to 0.6194 and a storming pass for the Old 51. 0.9963 to sixty to Freddy's 1.0507, 3.9517/301.84 at the eighth ahead of Freddy's 4.0921/294.28, Freddy looked to shut it off a touch before the stripe. Shakefest next pair, 1.1172 to sixty for Norbert with tyres shaking and motor zinging by then, 0.9849 to sixty for Urban and then shake, 'Vette made a move to the left and a cylinder went out on the right side, shut it off. Very brief burnout by Robert but that may have been in the plan since his back-up guy had not gone very far downtrack. 1.0078 to sixty for Robert, 1.0263 for Mats, Mats hit shake about 150 feet out and the Crown Victoria made a move to the right, Mats pedalled very briefly and didn't seem to lose much momentum as he got to the eighth in 4.1762/290.48. Didn't notice anything amiss with Robert but the 4.3826/212.68 eighth betrays an early shut-off. Marc had the sixty foot advantage 1.0009 to 1.0552, and was ahead at the eighth 4.0356/291.26 to David's 4.1700/293.00, some smoke from David's motor in the second half and Marc's car was moving about its lane quite seriously but he stayed with it, David made up the time on Marc by going straight. Shake for Micke not far off the line, 1.0509 to sixty and the Camaro turned to the left, Micke got off the gas by 100 feet. Great run for Mattias, 1.0269 to sixty and 3.9688/309.61 at the eighth, right down the middle of his lane with no dramas.

  1. Mattias Wulcan 5.9963/390.74

FIA Top Methanol Dragster qualifying session 1 (left lane first)

Jonny Lagg 14.1618/76.45 bye; Paul Ingar Udtian no time, Tethys 19.7963/42.29

Jonny went about fifty feet then his tyres went up in smoke, 1.0013 to sixty and off the gas a few feet later. A bang from Tethys' motor before the burnout but the motor continued to run and Tet carried on, no obvious ill effects. Car owner Grumpy leapt the guardrail to check something just as Tethys staged but just as quickly turned and jumped back over the rail. Paul Ingar must have rolled the beams in stage as the red lit before the lights ran although I can't say I saw him move (that doesn't mean he didn't) and he shut it off without going anywhere. I don't think he was bulbed by the Autostart. Tet's tyres went up in smoke at the hit, 1.3056 to sixty, one pedal and the tyres went up in smoke again so he shut off.

Qualifying after this session:

  1. Jonny Lagg 14.1618/76.45
  2. Tethys 19.7963/42.29

FIA Top Methanol Funny Car qualifying session 1 (left lane first)

Ari Pietilä 6.0953/293.80 bye; Danny Bellio 7.5684/200.00, Ulf Leanders 6.3036/409.71; Leif Andréasson 5.5743/400.00, Jonnie Lindberg 5.4379/432.69; Johan Lindberg 13.7885/67.32, Adam Flamholc 5.7893/404.49

Ari's tyres didn't light on the burnout, one of his crew gestured to the water box marshal to put a bit more water down next time. Lack of a burnout didn't seem to hurt though, nice pass. 0.9697 to sixty, 3.8216/313.59 at the eighth, got a little close to the centre line in the second half and shut off a touch early. 1.0369 to sixty for Danny and then thumping shake and a pedal; similar story for Ulf, 1.0810 to sixty with some smoke from his tyres at the hit. 4.1936/231.35 at the eighth for Danny and off the gas, 4.3646/319.91 for Leif. Fantastic match between Leif and Jonnie, Jonnie on the first half of European ET and speed records, well done Jonnie! Thanks to Spencer Tramm for getting in touch to let us know that Jonnie's 432.69 kmh / 268.86 mph is actually faster than Frank Manzo's NHRA record of 268.06 mph or 431.40 kmh so we could be on a world best here. Jonnie away first 0.1463 to 0.2244, Leif had the better sixty foot 0.9610 to 0.9855, there was a puff of smoke from the right side of Jonnie's car just past sixty but difficult to say what that could have been. Leif to the eighth in 3.6824/334.78 but Jonnie was visibly ahead at 3.6196/348.84. Johan away first 0.3266 to 0.3787, 1.0406 to sixty but tyres shaking by that point and shut it off. 0.9451 to sixty for Adam, car made a move left and right about 300 feet out byt Adam had it covered. 3.8081/315.60 at the eighth. Micke Larsson was towed back to the pits without starting.

  1. Jonnie Lindberg 5.4379/432.69
